Applying mascara to your bottom lashes can be tricky, especially if you weren’t blessed with super-long lashes to begin with. Short eyelashes can make applying mascara to even your top lashes a feat in itself, and the lower lashes being even shorter definitely presents more of a challenge for most women. If you want to learn some great tips for applying mascara in general (and especially to avoid that unattractive clumping look that too much mascara tends to give you), check out this great resource on How to Apply Mascara without Clumping or Spider Lashes. If you’re pretty confident in your mascara-applying abilities, but are more concerned with learning how to apply it to your bottom lashes, read on.
How to Apply Mascara on Your Bottom Lashes:
Have you ever noticed those tiny little black dots under a woman’s bottom eyelashes? Perhaps you’ve even done it yourself. These dots are mascara prints or smudges from the bottom lashes, and are usually the result of either 1) not knowing how to apply mascara correctly to the bottom lashes, or 2) applying too much mascara to the bottom lashes. Depending on your personal preference and eyelash length, you may not even bother applying mascara to the bottom lashes. Some women think it’s too much and looks heavy or over the top. Personally, I am one of the lucky ones who was blessed with wonderfully long eyelashes on both the top and bottom. Therefore, I always apply my mascara on both the top lashes and the bottom lashes. Over the years and through trial and error, I have learned a few tricks about the correct application of mascara to the bottom lashes, so I will share those tips here:
Tip #1: Take preventative measures against smudging and those unattractive mascara dots that make you look like an amateur when it comes to make-up application. This means that if you are prone to smudging your mascara on the skin below your bottom lashes (don’t worry, this is common), you should take a small tissue, or even a square of toilet paper, and hold it underneath your bottom eyelashes while you apply your mascara with the other hand. This means that a quick slip of the unsteady hand will not result in mascara smudges all over your skin that will make you to want to re-do your eye make-up entirely.
Tip #2: If it’s already too late, and you’ve dotted your skin with mascara smudges by accident when applying mascara to your bottom lashes, try using a liquid (not powder) concealer and triangle make-up sponge to cover up the dots. You can do this quite easily by using a very tiny amount of concealer on the tip of the triangle sponge applicator, and lightly brushing the tip back and forth underneath your bottom lashes. This will cover up your “mascara mistakes” and also lighten the skin around your eyes, emphasizing the darkness of the mascara on your lashes. As a result, your eye make-up will “pop” and more attention will be drawn to your eyes.
Tip #3: As I mentioned, a lot of women have the issue of using too much mascara on their lashes – particularly the bottom ones, which are naturally shorter and harder to work with. Therefore, if you want to use mascara on your bottom lashes, try wiping the mascara wand with a tissue before you attempt to apply it. Doing so removes the excess mascara from the wand and makes application easier and less messy. It also reduces the chances of ugly spider lashes and clumps.
Tip #4: Last but not least, try holding the mascara wand vertically instead of horizontally. I realize that this is counter-intuitive, and goes against everything you’ve ever learned about mascara application, but it’s a tried and true method for applying mascara to those hard-to-reach bottom lashes. Gently slide the mascara wand from the base to the tips of the bottom eyelashes in one smooth motion, holding the wand vertically. If you have short bottom lashes, you may find this tip particularly helpful!
If you still have trouble with applying mascara to your bottom lashes, invest in a lash comb or a mascara that is made especially for bottom eyelashes. I was recently given one of these mascaras as a gift, and didn’t realize they even existed until then, but they’re awesome! As I said, I am one of the lucky ones who has long top and bottom lashes, but the tiny mascara tube and wand for the bottom lash mascara really helps make mascara application to the bottom lashes easier. And if all else fails, practice! Make-up application is an art that woman must master, so experiment with different techniques one evening if you have nothing to do. You’ll be surprised at what a little practice can do for you!
